Yes, you can take a bicycle on many French trains, but the answer depends on the service, the route and whether the bike travels assembled or packed. On some TGV INOUI and INTERCITÉS trains, you must reserve a dedicated bicycle space while buying your ticket. TER rules can change by region, line and date. OUIGO has separate rules for packed and assembled bikes.

For a trip with connections, check every train segment separately. A passenger seat does not automatically confirm room for an assembled bicycle. SNCF Connect’s current bike travel guide is the place to confirm the rule for your exact service before you pay.

TGV INOUI and INTERCITÉSDedicated spaces exist on certain trains; add a bike space when buying the passenger ticket. Availability is limited.SNCF lists a folded bike or a disassembled bike in a labelled cover as luggage, subject to the size limit and luggage conditions. The exact train must show a bike option, and your confirmation should show the bicycle pictogram.
TERRegional rules vary. Some routes or dates require a separate reservation, while other trains accept bikes subject to room.Folded bikes are accepted under TER conditions; packed bike dimensions and storage rules can vary.Check the TER region and line for your travel date. A passenger ticket alone may not guarantee a space.
OUIGO Grande VitesseNot accepted assembled.A folded bike or disassembled bike in a cover can be added under OUIGO’s conditions; the current SNCF FAQ lists €5 per passenger per journey.Add the option during booking or, under current rules, up to 30 minutes before departure. Check dimensions and terms.
OUIGO Train ClassiqueA limited assembled-bike option is listed at €10 per passenger per journey and must be reserved in advance. The folded or covered option is listed at €5 per passenger per journey.Confirm which OUIGO service you have selected; the assembled option does not apply to Grande Vitesse.

How to book an assembled bike space

#

Search the full journey

#

Search for your full journey and travel date in SNCF Connect.

Add the bike option

#

Before choosing a train, open Add and select Add a bike. Choose the offer that matches your bicycle and the number of bikes.

Choose a train with space

#

Compare the results. Pick a train that shows bicycle availability; a seat result by itself is not enough.

Verify the confirmation

#

Check the final journey confirmation for the bike pictogram and make sure the number of bikes is right. Keep the passenger and bicycle confirmation together.

Check every leg

#

Repeat the check for each leg if you change trains, especially when a connection includes a TER service or a separate regional booking system.

SNCF says a bike space on TGV INOUI or INTERCITÉS has to be booked when you buy the train ticket. If only some people in your group are bringing bikes, the bike booking may need to be made separately from tickets for passengers without bikes. Do not assume one bicycle reservation covers a whole group or every connecting train.

Why TER needs its own check

#

TER is a regional service, so “TER accepts bikes” is not a complete answer. A reservation can be compulsory on a particular line, during a busy season, or on selected days. It may be paid or free, and SNCF notes that many TER bike spaces cannot be reserved in SNCF Connect. The exact regional booking link and conditions depend on the route.

Check the route and date on SNCF Connect, then follow its regional bike-booking link or the relevant TER region’s site. Look for whether the reservation is mandatory, whether it must be made before buying the passenger ticket, and whether the rule applies on your departure day. For example, the SNCF FAQ listed several seasonal TER reservation schemes ending on 27 September 2026; those dates do not establish the rule for later journeys. Treat every seasonal notice as date-specific and look for the current one.

If your journey has a TGV followed by a TER, confirm the bike on both segments. A booked place on the TGV does not reserve the TER space, and a TER reservation does not change the TGV’s conditions.

What if no train appears with a bike space?

#

An empty result can mean the train has no dedicated bike area, all spaces are taken, or that train’s rules do not match the option you selected. It is not a confirmation that you can bring an assembled bike anyway.

Try these steps:

  • Search a different departure time or a different route with fewer changes.
  • Check whether the regional TER site handles the reservation separately from SNCF Connect.
  • If your bicycle can be folded or disassembled, see whether it qualifies as luggage on that service. SNCF’s general TGV INOUI and INTERCITÉS guidance gives a maximum of 90 × 130 × 50 cm for a folded or covered bike. OUIGO publishes a different maximum for a covered non-folding bike, so do not reuse one train’s dimensions for another.
  • If you use a cover, make sure it is a labelled bicycle cover and that the bicycle is disassembled before accessing the platform where SNCF requires it.
  • If none of the train options works, consider another departure or a separate bicycle transport service rather than boarding without the required reservation.

SNCF says a bicycle booking usually cannot be added after the ticket is purchased, except for TER. If you already bought a TGV INOUI or INTERCITÉS ticket without a bike space, check the current exchange/cancellation terms and contact SNCF before making another booking. Avoid assuming that an empty bicycle option can be fixed at the station.

Check the bicycle type and the rule date

#

SNCF’s current FAQ excludes recumbent bikes, tricycles, tandems, cargo bikes, longtails, trailers and bikes transported in a cardboard box from SNCF trains. Its French FAQ also announces an expanded exclusion list effective 13 December 2026: bicycles longer than 185 cm, tires wider than 6 cm, fatbikes, bikes with more than two wheels, gyropods and hoverboards. That future change is based on the SNCF notice in French available on 14 October 2026; recheck the policy if your trip is on or after the effective date.

This can affect a bicycle that looks like a standard touring or mountain bike if it crosses a stated size threshold. Measure the bike as required by the current operator rules, including tires, and ask SNCF or the TER region if the classification is unclear. Do not infer acceptance from the fact that an online booking lets you buy a passenger ticket.

A simple booking plan

#

Before paying, write down each train number, operator and region for the route. For every segment, confirm whether the bike remains assembled, whether a reservation is required, where to make it, and what size or type limits apply. Then make the passenger booking and bike reservation in the order specified by that service.

On departure day, arrive with enough time to find the correct carriage and remove panniers if the regional operator asks. Keep the bike in its assigned area and do not block doors or aisles. Bring the reservation details in an accessible form, and check the operator’s travel updates in case a train or connection changes.

The reliable rule is simple: confirm a bicycle space for each train before you travel. French rail services do carry bikes, but one general “yes” cannot replace the booking conditions for your particular train.
